I want to talk about Gundi Deitz

words from her website: "Creatures with a strange sexuality, girl-like an massive lost in meditation and whimsical at the same time, helplessly plump and yet frivolous."

I'm drawn in.   The power of this work for me is it is all about contrast and extremes, but in so subtle a way - there is such solid, stubborn power displayed in the fragile porcelain 'picture' of a pudgy, seemingly simple, innocent, young (?) girl.

Gundi Deitz website is very interesting in that the gallery format shows photos of work spanning 30 years.  I find it a fascinating commentary on the emergence of a style and it's spectacular expansion.  I found it very informative to see such an amazing artists career arc.

Please go check out the works page on her website.

the many headses of Claire Loder

I noticed Claire Loder's work over a year ago and in an instant I was a fan.
I just love her wacky heartfelt expressionistic work....and the best web presence I've seen in a long while.

go here  and  look  into  the  mirrors.

emma hack & florence Broadhurst

Emma Hack takes body painting to a whole other level.
Here she has a series of paintings of the brilliant Florence Broadhurst's wallpaper

I admit I'm not sure how I feel about this.  I think the fact that I am a HUGE fan of Florence Broadhurst makes me want to look at this for a while.

Well?  check it out...leave comments, I do wonder what you think?

Jim Denevan and Outstanding in the Field

Jim Denevan is an artist.  He draws in the sand for hours free hand, and he revels in the fact that nature will have her way with his work.

A Santa Cruz surfer turned Chef entrepreneur who also happens to head up the successful outfit Outstanding in the Field.

Outstanding in the Field began in 1999, in Santa Cruz, California, when Jim Denevan had an idea: To dine at the source on the very soil that nourished the bounty on the plate, in the company of the farmers who cultivated it. Soon San Francisco cooks were tramping out to the farms to get involved, and the al fresco/adventure dinners began to spread across the country. In 2003, Jim and Katy Oursler bought a 1953 vintage bus and started East to set up dinners anywhere beautiful and meaningful, always close if not on a farm, by local loving chefs, mostly under the open skies. Since 1999, they’ve included 180 farm dinners, including six tours of North America.

Come on, how can you not like this guy's style?!

Outstanding in the Field recently announced 2010 Tour Dates for their dinners; they sell out fast...quite an amazing experience!

nudibranch love

I have always had a thing for these flashy little oceanic beauties.

Nat. Geographic has a slick photo series of only a few of the some 3000+ species of Nudibranchs that cover all oceans of the world.  No, no, it's not nudie beach, it's Nudibraaanck.

Anyway, I have long fantasized about doing a bunch of small porcelain pieces of these poisonous little wonders.

Sharon Virtue brings the FUNK {SHON}

FUNK{SHON}

Sharon Virtue
Artist Reception Saturday, April 10
opening 5pm!

552A NOE STREET
SAN FRANCISCO

As you know; I have talked about Sharon before.  As usual, she's trucking along at high speed.

In Sharon's words:
"My new ceramic show demonstrates how functional ceramics bring some bling to your dinning experience.

Challenging our assumptions about representation by playfully blurring the boundaries between western ideas about ‘high’ art and traditional categorization of ‘African Art’. Your Spring will be sprung with these brilliant funky functional ceramic wares inspired by African textiles and Rococo ornamentation.

FUNK {SHON} a playful pun on the word function, is the first show of only utilitarian ceramics I have created. I believes tha a healthy portion of art should be included in all of our daily diets. What better way to provide that than on a beautifully decorated plate or cup or bowl?

My new functional ceramic work is a combination of 17th century ceramic decorative art forms and African textiles. Inspiration came from Chris Ofili and Yinka Shonibare, British artists of African decent, whose works open up debate about the social, cultural and political issues that shape our histories and construct our identity."

I can tell you from experience that attending Sharon's show will be an experience.

One you won't soon forget;
chicken suits
glitter glam
laughter
food & drink

a supremely unique time will be on offer.

...and her work really does fly out the door - so, get there on the early side!
