Groundhogese

Punxsutawney Phil lore
Zoological data suggests that groundhogs have a average lifespan of 10 years in captivity and 6 years in the wild, with a maximum lifespan of 14 years in captivity documented.[3]Punxsutawney Phil fans say that there is only one Phil (all the other groundhog weathermen are impostors), and that he has made weather prognostications for over 121 years as of 2011. They say that every summer, Phil is fed a sip of the mysterious Groundhog Punch, which magically lengthens his life for seven years. This is done by Inner Circle members.[4] According to the Groundhog Club, Phil, after making the prediction, speaks to the Club President in "Groundhogese", which only the Inner Circle appear to understand, and then his prediction is translated for the entire world.

how's that for creative, eh?

Punxsutawney Phil has weighed in; Spring is coming fast!  I'm thinking the East Coast won't mind!
Let's not forget the imposter: Staten Island Chuck

...oh  and yeah, it may be my birthday, but I'm not part of the "inner circle" and I don't drink any groundhog punch - all sounding a tad bit druid-y.

Seaweed Salad Days

The phrase "Salad Days" coined by Shakespeare's Cleopatra in 1606.
"...My salad days, / When I was green in judgment, cold in blood..."

one of my favorite Shakespearean idioms...

(did you know our guy Will is responsible for some 700 words being added to the english language...think about that for a sec...)

I call the sunny summer days on the coast when the ocean is 1000 shades of blue and green, whales, dolphins in sight and not a soul on the beach "Seaweed Days"...

yesterday was just such a glorious day!

I love seaweed - the shape, surface and form - sculptural, ethereal, living mostly unseen until it is ripped off its bearing and shows itself on the beach...

it's official

I'm will be selling my wares at the Cocoanut Grove in lovely Santa Cruz, Ca
at the 2010 Santa Cruz Sea Glass & Ocean Art Festival
Saturday & Sunday
November 6th & 7th

The Cocoanut Grove was built in 1907 as the "Neptune Casino." It was named a California Historic Landmark in May 1989. This 100-year-old facility boasts a rich and colorful history and a spectacular view of the Monterey Bay.

The Cocoanut Grove spells its name "Cocoanut" instead of "Coconut" since the facility's name was changed in the 1930s. This is an the OG way of spelling coconut, as in the Marx Brothers' movie, "The Cocoanuts."

The Cook & Butler go to market

I teach a Mosaic class at a clay studio near by called Clay Creations.  Some work completed (mostly) in class.  We have a great time!  I am enjoying teaching a class again.

These two are leaving my class :( to start their Vegan Catering adventure ;) at a few local Farmer's Markets.   They are Shivie and Cemaaj "The Cook & Butler" vegan chefs and lovely friends extroardinare!

And we friends have been enjoying their fabulous food for months now...

I'm not a vegan, or vegetarian, I love a burger as much as the next guy.  BUT Shiv and Cemaaj make the best VERGERS I have every tried. Seriously. I'm still waiting to test out the BeetVerger.  They are dynamic in their knowledge of ingredients - and we're not talking mock chicken here people; we're talking talent in knowing your craft and continuing to try new things and expand the menu - though they fit right into the vegan demographic, they are looking to educate and excite the meat eating population to expand on their diets and be more, well, vegan-esque...

What I LOVE about these guys is they aren't about making you into a cute little vegan - they are about introducing Vegan-esque ways of eating into your regular eating habits. There is an education going on and it is smart and delicious.

really - get smart about your food; check them out.  look into it.  give it a go.
You can find them\meet them at:

Point Richmond Farmer's Market

If you are interested in catering or more information: link to the website and send them a note.  They are the nicest people!
More about them:

"The big news is that after being “TeamRAW” for the last year or so, we realized that by our very name (which by the way we love) we may be excluding the very people we want to help-namely those that eat meat and/or dairy and want to implement a few healthy changes into their diet without necessarily giving up meat altogether.

In such cases we have had success with people choosing to be vegetarian, vegan or raw vegan for one or more dedicated days a week. We can either prepare for the food for those days or teach you to make the food for yourself-that is where we see ourselves helping others. And again, TeamRAW seems to imply “RAW” (duh, it’s in the name!) and excludes those that are not, we are not even 100% raw (I for one rebel against anything that causes you to be 100%!). There are times, especially in the colder, darker months, that we eat cooked, vegan food alongside some raw staples.

So, what is the new name I hear you cry-drum roll…we shall be called “The Cook & Butler”…we can do all things kitchen, from setting up the ideal raw/vegan kitchen to preparing food and showing you how to prepare the food for yourself. So in that respect the name is more fitting…

But there is more…my birth name is “Cook” and Cemaaj’s birth name is “Butler”, we really are the Cook & Butler by birth and now we find ourselves sharing our life and passion together, back in the kitchen, we feel we have probably spent a few lifetimes there.

We are in the process of finalizing our fabulous new logo (thanks to our Angel, Linda) and changing over the web address (the new address will be www.thecookandbutler.com) …other new things on the horizon…

Forage SF Underground Market

SF Underground Market was conceived of by Iso Rabins (pictured above) in early December 2009. Frustrated by his inability to get a booth at legit farmers markets (to be in most farmers markets in SF you need to be certified as the primary producer of the food you sell, and since wild foraged food grows on its own, there is technically no producer), as well as amazed by the wealth of delicious professional quality food being made in Bay Area home kitchens.
The first market was held in a private home in the Mission neighborhood of San Francisco, with 8 vendors, and about 200 attendees. Now at number three (at the time of this post) , It has grown to 47 vendors and over 1,200 people attending.

The SF Underground Market is an incubator. A place where budding businesses can get a leg up on their road to legitimacy.

Facinating article on trees at wired.com here

yes, yes, yess-a-roonie; we can officially call this an obsession.  I have a thing for trees, not necessarily a hugging thing. LOOK at the Rainbow Eucalyptus tree (first pic) isn't it out of control?

It got me started on a tree binge ...
